If you look back on the history of Belarus, you'll see
that among all the periods there is special time called by many Golden
Age of our country. This is XVI-th century, Renaissance, the time of the greatest
cultural, intellectual and economical peak of Belarus; the time
of outstanding people, governmental and cultural figures world wide.
The XVI-th century in the history of Belarus is the time of the most important
events, that formed Belarus as a nation. The famous historian V. Pitcheta (В. Пичета)
characterised this epoch like:"Renaissance - is a cultural event of
the first importance in spiritual life of the people of Belarus".
The most
characteristic feature of XVI-th century Renaissance in Belarus is the development
of Reformation on our land. In XVI-th century all the Europe had global changes in its
spiritual, economical and political life: movement of church renovation, returning to
biblical bases in Christianity. This movement, called Reformation,
caused development of many nations. German, Swedes, English, Dutchmen
thanks to Reformation formed as actual present day nations.
Reformation has become central event of all XVI-th century. To the full extend this
pertains to our country. We can't talk about Renaissance in Belarus,
ignoring Reformation, and, from the other side we can't separate Reformation from
Renaissance. Outstanding figures of Renaisance in Belarus were at the same time
figures of Reformation. They are Franses Skarina, who taped the first Bible in
Belarus language, Simon Budniy, who published the first Belarus
Catechism, in which he explained in simple and understandable way basis of belifs,
as they are Gospel, Vasily Tyapinsky, who announced in public about necessity of
literature and culture development in their native language and himself started
New Testament translation into Belarus language, in order every person in Belarus could
easily understand the Word of God. Also magnate Micholay Radzivil Cherniy, who was
opening churches, schools, printing houses, chancellor Astaphey Volovich, who was
leader of land reform, he prepared the most perfect code of law in Europe of XVI-th
century - Great Lithuanian Principality Statute.
The Reformation formed Belarus
regeneration, created the Golden Age of Belarus, put the foundation of the Belarus
nation. Most geneations of Belarus people turn to XVI-th century searching their
roots, their identity, their destination, their ideas.
