Corr.: How did you start writing songs for God? A.L.: When I visited the Lord's Tomb and the place where he was born in Bethlehem, I was so deeply impressed that I wanted to glorify God's greatness and, in spite of the fact that I had never written music before, decided to write music for some Biblical verses. This is how "Psalm 139" became part of the repertoire of "Jazz-Expromt." Corr.: How do you write your music? A.L.: I started working with "Jazz-Expromt" as an arranger, and at that time I was not thinking about works of my own. But God has his plan for every one of us. When I received the Lord, he unveiled in me a talent to compose music. Since I am not a professional composer, I write my works spontaneously. An idea always comes from God, and only when he by his grace gives you this idea you can develop it and realize it. Corr.: What does music mean to you? A.L.: Music is my profession and also my hobby. Music helps me realize the talents that God gave me. This is a huge part of my life, and I cannot imagine my existence without it. Corr.: Could you tell us more about yourself? A.L.: In 1977, I graduated from Kiev State Conservatory with emphasis in piano music; in 1981, I finished post graduate studies. Upon graduation I took up a job as the chief accompanist for the State Academic Choir's Cappella "Dumka." In April 1990, I was rewarded the title of Ukraine's Distinguished Musician. In 1990, I began working at Kiev's National Opera Theatre. In December 1990, I organized the Chapel Choir "Kiev;" in the spring of 1992, this group won a golden Diploma at Schumann's International Music Contest in Zwickau, Germany. In 1993, I began teaching piano class at Kiev State Conservatory. That same year I started to work as an arranger and composer with the vocal group "Jazz-Expromt." My arrangement of the Ukrainian folk song "Leliya" was recognized as the best A'Cappella song of 1993. I love playing works of Skryabin, Ravel, Rakhmaninov, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Berg. Their works have been a major influence upon my musical thought and style.
