Corr.: When did you decide to write and perform Christian music? B.K.: It just happened by itself. In my childhood like many other children I sang everything that heard. When I received Christ I started singing Christian songs. Since 1994 I'm a soloist of the Renewal group. I always sang for God since I grew up in a Christian surrounding. I was not going to perform on the stage, but when asked you hardly can refuse, you know. N.S.: As I also grew up in a Christian family I sang songs of praise from my childhood. I sing in the Renewal group since 1991. I started writing songs in 1987. A decision of writing and singing songs became something natural since Jesus came into my life. N.L.: I never could write Christian music. I started performing it when received Jesus. I was asked to sing in a church choir. In the Renewal I sing since 1991. T.Sh.: I decided to sing Christian songs in 1994 when started performing in the Renewal group. I never intended to write songs but sometimes I do it -- praise the Lord. Corr.: Why did you call your group Renewal? B.K.: We did not call it so on purpose. I mean we didn't think we would work seriously. But on the first recording this question arose. We were going to release our first album but the group had no name. Once during the recording our sound operator asked us, "So what, 'renews'?" That's how the group received its name. N.S.: In fact our group is called after the name of the church it was born in. Corr.: How do you write your songs? N.S.: The birth of each song is different, it depends on certain conditions, state of mind, etc. The song Jesus I Sing of You was born in 1987. It expressed what my heart was filled with. I wanted to express my feelings through a song. Words and music were written simultaneously: I just took a pen and wrote words, and the melody came from my heart. T.Sh.: Every time it goes differently. Sometimes I sit at the piano and thumb through the Psalms; if I like some verses -- immediately the music's heard in my ears -- this way a song God You Are My God came into existence. Sometimes songs come under a strong excitement or inspiration -- the music first and then the words. B.K.: Usually I don't write songs. There were some moments in my life when I set down at the piano, took a pencil and a sheet of paper, wrote lyrics of 4 or 5 stanzas without any mistake and than started playing it. But there were just few such songs and mostly they were very intimate, thus I'm neither composer nor poet. Corr.: What does music mean to you? B.K.: Everyone knows that music is an alternative way of expressing your thoughts and feelings, thoughts easier being expressed by words and feelings by music. I can't live without music as well as I can't imagine my life without poems and lyrics. So does every romantic soul. N.S.: For me music is life and serving God. N.L.: Music is a big part of my life. I pray God that it always be so. T.Sh.: Music is almost all my life. It's my work, my ministry, the state of my mind. Corr.: What category of people are your songs aimed at? B.K.: Mostly they directed at either Christians or the audience acquainted with a Christian culture. However it doesn't draw us from performing our concerts right on the streets. Everything we sing is familiar to everybody. But often our songs sound as an alternative to the negative trends of modern music. N.S.: Our songs are aimed at different categories of people but at my opinion they are mostly intended for Christian. T.Sh.: But I do think our songs are intended for a wide audience. Corr.: Where do you give your concerts? B.K.: We give concerts in different cities. Among them are Moscow, Izhevsk, Odessa, Donetsk, Mariupol and many others. Corr.: Would you tell us more about yourselves? B.K.: Boris Konovalenko, born in June 23, 1979. I'm a student of the Priazov State Technical University. Single.
