Cor.: When and how did you make decision to write and perform Christian music? Father: I've been making music ever since I was a child. Before we got saved, our repertoire would consist of different kinds of performances: classical, folk, circus and variety shows. But when our family accepted the Lord, then everyone, both the children and me, sensed that our calling is completely different. Eugenia: The decision was reached in 1990. I made such decision beacause singing about God and for God brings much more joy than performing any other songs. Grigoriy: God's Word tells us to serve God with the gifts that He has given us. And I want to do nothing besides music. Alexandra: As soon as I accepted the Lord, I wanted to praise Him with my songs. Valentine: I perform music from infancy, so I can imagine nothing besides it. Constantine: At the age of 4 I wrote my first song, and wanted to perform it. I was not making any decision - it came to me by itself! Cor.:What name did you give your group and why? Father: We did not choose the name. It came about of itself, everyone started calling us according to our family name: "The Garkaviy family ensemble". Cor.: How do you write your songs? Father: Everything is saturated with Divine music, one just needs to hear it. When it starts sounding in me I notate it. Eugenia: With God being my helper I'm doing stage direction and choreographic staging. Grigoriy: When inspired I write music, and classes, which I take in the academy of music, help me make arrangements. Alexandra: When I feel the inspiration I take a pen and a sheet of paper. Instead of music I write lyrics and stage plays. Valentine: And I like performing the songs that God sends to my brothers, sisters and father. Constantine: I sing to my father and he notates, and all others back me up by their music instruments. Cor.: What does music mean to you? Father: It means a lot. It's both my ministry and job and my main hobby. Eugenia: My calling is music theater. Music inspired me for staging dances and dramas. Bible is full of examples where music inspired some for prophesy, some for conquering the enemy... And it inspires my artistic work. Alexandra: For me it's a means of expressing my feelings and emotions to God. And God speaks through the music He sends. Valentine: It's a way of praising God. Constantine: Music is vital for me. Music is my home, because I was born in music family!!! Cor.: What category of people are your songs aimed at? Father: Our songs are aimed at practically all the categories of people. We also sing for children (for sunday schools and for unbeliver's children), both youth outreach songs and song-sermons for Christians. We use different music styles: rock, jazz, pop, rap, rave, country, sympho for the people who prefer only a certain style. Cor.: Could you tell us more about yourself? Father: My name is Sergey Garkaviy; Born 01/12/1960. Education: higher. Graduated from Kharkov State Institute of Culture, choirmaster department. Besides that - by correspondence the National Arts University in Moscow, arrangement department; guitar teacher's department; pop direction department. Married, 5 children. Artistic life: From childhood up, I was studying the accordion at music school, I loved to compose while playing the guitar. In Kharkov at school I created a band Sun Brothers. I wrote songs for the band and was soloist-vocalist. We participated in different regional competitions and festivals. When my eldest brother came back from the army, another student group was formed. After graduating from the Institute in 1981 I was sent to work in Crimea as a director of a village cultural center. Since 1983 I've been performing first with daughter, and then with other children of mine. In 1989 we participated in All-Union Children's International Festival "Eupatoria - 89". In 1990 we participated in Crimea regional festival of folk arts, where the ensemble was given a title "Awardee of Crimea Folk Arts Festival". In 1991 we performed in the First Crimea Republican Festival of Folk Arts. We participated in the First All-Union Festival of Family Ensembles - took the first place and were given the title "Awardee of All-Union Festival of Family Arts". In 1992 we participated in the Crimea Republican Festival of Children's, Teen-age and Youth Arts - given the title "Awardee of the Festival". We participated in International Festival of Children's Arts "Eupatoria-92" - given the title "Awardee of the International Children's Arts Festival". In 1993 we participated in the Ukrainian Television programs: "Kanal - D", "Fant - Loto Nadiya" etc. We were given the title "National Ensemble". We participated in the Third Republican Festival of Crimean Folk Arts - given title "Awardee of the Festival". In 1994 we were given the title "Awardee of the Second Crimea Republican Children's, Teen-age and Youth Arts Festival". We participated in International Children's Arts Festival "Primrose". We went on an expedition to the North Pole as a part of artistic expedition of International Children's TV station and participated in a TV program "Round Dance around the Globe". We made a jubilee presentation for the fifth anniversary of the ensemble and 15-th anniversary of the family. We made presentation of authorial program "Five composers in one family". In 1995 we participated and won a TV competition "Crystal Shoe" in Moscow. We made a tour throughout USA (17 states). In 1996 we participated in TV competition "Gloria", Yalta city - awarded with "Grand Prix". In 1999 I became a director of All-Ukrainian Christian Culture and Arts Center "Living Water". I've got many artistic plans: we started making some video clips for our songs. Also we have both humanitarian and festival projects... There are many ideas, but the things, which conform to God's will, are to come true. Eugenia:Eugenia Garkavaya; 13/04/80. Education: student of the International Slavic University, business administration department, specialty: tourism and hotel business. Unmarried. Hobbies: choreography, theater, guitar, cooking. Artistic life: My artistic life began from 3 years of age, when I started performing duet with my father. That's the time when I started doing acrobatics and dancing. In 1989 together with composer Yuriy Saulskiy I was emceeing music and dance improvisation program as part of the International Children's Festival "Eupatoria - 89". For 5 years I've studied in choreographic school of Kharkov city. I finished music school, piano department and meanwhile I was studying the guitar. I was winner of All-Russian TV Competition "Crystal Shoe" and awardee of the International TV Competition "Gloria", Yalta city. In recent years I quit participating in secular festivals, having devoted myself to serving God. Since 1999 I've been leading children's and youth drama-choreographic groups. The children and youth from Simferopol churches. During this time a few choreographic compositions, musicals, mini-dramas and theater performances were staged. I'd like to get two educations and to become a professional choreographer and stage director. I'm praying that God might enable me to use everything he put in me, and in the place where I could bring the most glory to the Creator. Grigoriy:Grigoriy Garkaviy; 25/12/81 Education: Third year of the Chaykovskiy Music Academy, Simferopol city, brass band department. Unmarried. Hobbies: sports (athletics, basketball; in childhood I was a judo champion). Artistic life: With father and eldest sister I started performing in ensemble at the age of 4. At the age of 5 I started taking piano classes in the music school. In 1996 I finished the music school, clarinet department and got enrolled in Music academy. In childhood I became a winner of the All-Russian TV Contest "Crystal Shoe" and won the grand prix in the International TV Competition "Gloria", Yalta city. I participated in young composer's contest. In the family ensemble I'm playing the clarinet, saxophone, piano, guitar and balalaika. I make arrangements and record sound track for some musicals and music compositions for the Republican Christian Culture and Arts Center "Living Water". Also I participate in choreographic stagings. I'm planning to finish my music education and the Lord will show me the next thing to do. Aleksandra: Aleksandra Garkavaya; 06/04/83 Education: Fourth year student of Chaykovskiy Music Academy, Simferopol. Unmarried. Hobbies: I like dogs, cooking, reading, sports. Artistic life: At the age of 4 I joined the ensemble, at that time I was already studying in the music school, violin department and I was doing eurhythmics. Later I started writing poems and the Lord is still blessing me with them. I participated in different contests, TV programs ("Kanal - D", "Fant-Loto Nadiya" etc.). I finished the music and entered music academy. I participate in drama-choreographic group of the Republican Christian Culture and Arts Center "Living Water". I like singing to the guitar. Next year I'm going to enter conservatory in Kiev or Kharkov, because I think that music for God should be the best. Valentine: Valentine Garkaviy; 25/12/84 Education: not finished high-school instruction. Hobbies: I like cooking and sports. Artistic life: From childhood I've been participating in the family ensemble. I finished the music school's accordion department and curently I'm taking trumpet classes. I'm getting ready for entering Crimea Culture School. I dream to enter Ukraine's National Academy of Culture and Arts. Constantine: Constantine Garkaviy; 5/11/86 Education: schoolboy, 8 grade. Hobbies : sports (soccer), theater and humor. Artistic life : I'm just in the beginning of my artistic life. I try to find personal fulfilment in different genres (joke)! Artistic plans: First of all I'd like to finish school.
